Sand flies are the primary vectors of the protozoan parasite that cause leishmaniosis. This review aims to solve the main questions that may arise when we approach the study of these vectors, from a didactic approach, and their implications in public and animal health. First, we will focus on the biology of sandflies. Secondly, in the zoonosis section, we highlight its relevance in the transmission of Leishmania spp. and other pathogens. Finally, we will describe the prevention and control methods currently available against the infection caused by Leishmania spp under “One Health” focus.
