The article discusses the problems of improving sociolinguistic competence among students of philological faculties of universities in teaching foreign (German) language. It is argued that the ability of philology students to choose the language tools in the studied foreign language is adequate to the conditions of the communicative act, in accordance with the socio-communicative context, should be purposefully trained using specially developed methods based on general didactic and particular methodological principles. In particular, the article proposes the author's system of tasks and exercises to improve sociolinguistic competence among students of German philology; the system is aimed at automating the skills of students to build their speech, and consequently their speech behavior, in accordance with the socio-communicative context of the speech situation. The concept of the study is based on the principle that when establishing social relations between communicants, one option is used to express the content of speech, with already established relationships, depending on the distance between the communicants, their social roles, degree of acquaintance, etc. completely different options are possible.
