Natural actives when added to photoprotective formulations increase their effectiveness. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the protection against UV radiation of cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum cassia) and to develop a photoprotector. Cinnamon essential oil obtained from a handling pharmacy at concentrations was analyzed spectrophotometrically at wavelengths from 210 to 400 nm (UVC-UVA). The cinnamon essential oil with the greates protection capacity was then incorporated into a cream base for the development of a photoprotector. For the evaluation of protection against solar radiation, the photoprotector developed was diluted to 10% (m / v) in absolute ethyl alcohol, and was analyzed spectrophotometrically at wavelengths from 210 to 400 nm (UVC-UVA). The photoprotector with Cinnamon essential oil at a concentration of 1.5% (v/v) showed protection against solar radiation UVB and UVA (280-400 nm). The developed formula presented SPF 6.3, within the recommended by Brazilian legislation that requires an SPF of at least 6. The essential oil of cinnamon showed potential to be used as a photoprotector in association with other products since it does not absorb at all range of UVA radiation. The photoprotective activity may be related to its antioxidant potential. Further studies should be carried out to verify the association of cinnamon essential oil with other photoprotective substances and to prove the increase in the protective potential related to antioxidant activity
