This work responds to a descriptive investigation, with the objective of analyzing the management competencies that should characterize the director of the XXI century, starting from the knowledge and considerations that are handled in the specialized bibliography on the direction of educational systems. The methodological strategy is based on the hermeneutical method. Among the main findings we find that the competences of the educational director are defined as the knowledge and skills aimed at achieving the improvement of the processes that take place in educational, pedagogical, academic, administrative and community institutions. Those grouped into four broad categories: academic management, management, administrative and financial management, and community management. The educational direction in the countries of Latin America demands a director with manifest transformational leadership through the pedagogical, instructional or learning dimensions; distributed, participatory or collegiate and contextualized or social that contributes to local development.
