This article aimed to describe the profile of the elderly population in Belo Horizonte, MG who used SUS inpatient services from 2010 to 2019. This is a descriptive study that used secondary data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS), based on Hospital Admissions Authorizations (AIH). The variables used were sex, color / race, age group (60 to 69 years, 70 to 79 years, 80 years or more), character of care, average length of stay, average value of hospitalizations, deaths, causes of hospitalizations and causes of death. The results showed that 27% of the AIH corresponded to people aged 60 or over, the female gender, brown skin and people in the age group between 60 and 69 years were the most prevalent. AIH expenses corresponded to R$ 838,575,951.25, with an annual average of R$ 2,291.03 per hospitalization. 82.63% of admissions were of an emergency nature, on average the hospitalizations lasted nine days and the deaths corresponded to 9.50% of the records. The main causes of hospitalizations were diseases of the circulatory system and neoplasms. Among the deaths, infectious and parasitic diseases and neoplasms stood out. It is concluded that improvements are needed in health actions and in the performance of health professionals, whether they are in hospital institutions or not, in order to improve care for the elderly.
