Jean-Nicolas Illouz Symbolist Manifestoes The manifestoes published in increasingly popular venues from Hugo's death (1885) on, culminating with Moréas' s, show that writers understood that modes of legitimacy were changing and that public programmatic proclamations had become necessary, a historical evolution confirmed by the series of avant-gardes since then; at the same time, part of symbolism was about trying, in a stance also often reproduced, to construct legitimacy from within its own field of activity.Illouz Jean-Nicolas.
