Sport medicine is not offered as a separate specialist medical training in the German-speaking countries, and for this reason Danube University Krems has aimed to establish an innovative, interdisciplinary master’s program. The goal is to offer physicians a practice-oriented continuing education that covers a broad spectrum. The basis of the master education is the scientific discussion of problems in sports medicine, therefore, it should promote critical analysis of sports medical knowledge and innovative research approaches. The 5-semester program begins with evidence-based medicine and scientific theory, as well as communication, and then moves into specific sports medicine problems in different anatomical regions, in different sports, and in specific groups of athletes. Finally, a master’s thesis has to be written in order to apply what has been learned, it also can be provided as a publication. Thus, our graduates are able to implement sports medicine care in different performance classes and in health sports.
