This article evokes, exemplified through the case of the Açude Grande, a discussion about water, emphasizing the importance and neglect of society with this essential element in areas of semi-arid climate. The theoretical basis of the investigation was based on historical, documentary, bibliographic sources, in addition to applications of semi-structured interviews and analysis of water samples. Its general objective was to highlight the degree of importance given to the reservoir by the residents, workers or frequenters of its margins and to establish its degree of trophy by applying the IETSA. As a conclusion, it was found that the lake is eutrophic and that, although people recognize the importance of the spring for the city of Cajazeiras (PB, Brazil), few know its history, its current degradation stage or even feel responsible enough to act in for its revitalization.
