Based on Walter Benjamin’s text on Chinese paintings, we revisit the relation between certain intrinsic aspects of such paintings and some of his own conceptions, such as dialectical image, similarities, among others related to the problematic of modern transformations in the structure of perception. Through the reconstitution of Benjamin’s steps in his reflections on Chinese painting, we intend to connect them to his own theoretical developments in order to unveil the “reciprocal illumination” – Chinese painting assists in the illumination of Benjamin’s concepts, in the same way as the latter help in the understanding of the painting – that guides his argumentation.
