Mallarmé wondered, in The Ancient Gods, that if some spirit, imbued with prejudice, would believe that the deities no longer have any place on earth. Against such prevention he responded by waving poetry: reading the most beautiful pages of the French letters shows that nothing died of all that was once the spiritual cult of the race. The purpose of this article is to highlight that the question and the answer of the poet are in the living center of the argumentation of Olgária Matos. That for her, legends make perfect sense, here and now, in the modern situation. That the drunkenness with which the treatment of the ancient world with the cosmos is fulfilled, before science has detracted from it, has interested it much more than the denunciation of the disenchantment of science, in this residing its interesting mark.
