External causes are acquiring great magnitude, resulting in many victims, and is a challenge for the health sector. Among the causes, the traffic accidents are the major public health problems. Therefore, the objective was to analyze the epidemiological and functional profile of car crash victims treated at a physical therapy service in Fortaleza. This was a quantitative and cross-sectional study developed from May to November 2009, in ABCR-center. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Social Participation Scale (SPS) were used to collect data. We evaluated 53 men and four women, 37 ± 14 years old. The fractures were predominant (73.7%) and the lower limbs were the most affected (60%). Most patients had complete independence for FIM (54.4%), motor (42.1%) and cognitive (86%). Locomotion was the subdomain that showed the highest levels of dependence. Regarding social participation, (28.1%) had severe restriction. The social participation multivariate analysis was carried out using FIM motor, length of stay and marital status. We observed predominance of functional independence, with severe restriction in social participation; and that FIM motor, length of stay and marital status explained social participation.
