Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy as assessed by the BSES: a literature review Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life is the main preventive measure against child mortality. Self-efficacy refers to a mother’s self-confidence in her ability to breastfeed her infant successfully. Objective: To analyze Brazilian studies on breastfeeding selfefficacy, using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES). Methods: This is a narrative review of studies on breastfeeding self-efficacy using the BSES. Inclusion criteria were Brazilian studies available online in full-text, published between 2008 and 2017 in the Lilacs and Medline databases. Results: The literature search retrieved 14 studies published between 2009 and 2017. One study was published twice within two years once in Portuguese, in Brazil, and once abroad in English. Higher scores on the BSES were associated with delivery at a baby-friendly hospital, having a planned pregnancy, and starting breastfeeding at the first hour of life. Teen mothers scored better on the BSES than adult mothers. Conclusion: Further studies on breastfeeding self-efficacy using the BSES are needed to assess the difficulties and needs of pregnant and postpartum women, and allow early interventions. Key-words: self-efficacy, breastfeeding, lactation, postpartum period. 155 Enfermagem Brasil 2018;17(2):154-161
