In this research we tried to verify to what level the algebraic thinking is approached in the 6th year of Elementary School, with the content of fractions, and to propose a sequence of activities involving this topic. For that, an analysis of didactic books that approach the topic was made and a didactic sequence was elaborated to explore the content of fractions introducing the algebraic thinking. The proposal was applied with a 6th grade class from the State Education Network of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, seeking to raise reflections about the characteristics presented by the students in their productions, inquiries and attitudes. We applied a Pre-test, a sequence of activities involving algebraic thinking and a Post-test. At the end, the results obtained with these activities were analyzed. The result was a 5% increase in student performance, comparing their performance in the Pretest and Posttest. It is concluded, as well as the studied literature, that the development of algebraic thinking should start as soon as possible, giving the student an easier understanding of mathematical concepts.
