EnglishAfter a long period of intense territorial expansion that peaked in 2008, the restructuring of the Spanish banking sector has led the number of bank branches to decline from 45,000 to just over 28,000 in less than a decade. The implications of this trend are remarkable, as access to the physical office remains key in remote and/or disadvantaged communities, and there is an impact not yet measured in terms of relationship banking. The objective of this paper is to determine, through a statistical model, whether the phenomena of over-branching and under-branching have been present in the Spanish banking sector between 1999 and 2011. The responses suggest that the existence of such phenomena depends on the type of bank considered (commercial bank, savings bank or credit union), with the restructuring of the savings banks sector threatening access to banking services in some regions.
