The present work consisted in the application of the concept of defined integral in a practical case related to logistics processes. By using information and data corresponding to the first phase of he Panama Canal Expansion Project, a technical analysis was carried out to demonstrate for teaching purposes how a real large-scale engineering problem can be solved based on mathematical foundations of integral calculus and simple physical principles. The main objective of this work was to show the educational community a way of applying an investigative and practical teaching strategy of mathematics, with particular focus on the geometric concept of defined integral. Specifically, this work proceeded to calculate the expansion areas of the Panama Canal that allow the simultaneous passage of a Panamax and a Post-Panamax ship. The basic information for the development of the work was obtained from several sources, such as research and publications about the Panama Canal and the expansion project.
