Annually an estimated 46 million pregnancies are terminated by abortion due to various reasons such as economic factors personal circumstances health considerations and social and cultural factors. It is noted that safe and humane abortion is not always available due to legal and social restrictions. This has caused millions of women and girls to resort to dangerous and sometimes fatal procedures. This booklet part of a series of Population Council publications that highlight high-quality approaches to sexual and reproductive health care describes two clinics that women access safe and legal abortion: the Clinique dOrthogenie of Broussais in France and Parivar Seva Sanstha of India. The booklet describes the programmatic elements enabling the two health services to provide the kind of care they believe all women deserve.
