enabling rural women to acquire accessible and high quality abortion services. A comprehensive and evidence-based abortion care model suitable for rural women was developed and implemented in one district of a more developed state—Aurangabad, in Maharashtra—and one district of a lesser developed state, namely, Tonk in Rajasthan. Prior to its implementation, the Population Council conducted a baseline assessment of rural women's abortion-related perceptions and experiences. The Population Council is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organisation that seeks to improve the wellbeing and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable and sustainable balance between people and resources. The Council conducts biomedical, social science and public health research, and helps build research capacities in developing countries.
