The implementation of the Water Framework Directive of the European Union on the national level has reactivated the discussion on a financial reward of forests for providing water protecting services. This paper deals with the actors in this discussion and their different points of interests. Recent developments and current state of this process in Lower Saxony (Germany) are described. Furthermore, promising perspectives for a successful marketing of groundwater protection services are highlighted.
