In order to increase the involvement of local actors in forest management the article proposes a sociological analysis of the perceptions and actions engaging residents in relation with their local forest. The present case studies of alpine communities in Switzerland and France show how conflicts, values and ways of interaction vary according to the actors and depending on the relative importance of the service sector of the territories in question.
