In the 19th century the hydrogeological situation of the watershed of the Cassarate river was in an unstable state. After 120 years of hydraulic and forestry engineering, the situation surrounding the basin has improved. The article recapitulates a study, which was ordered by Swiss Federal authorities and the Canton Tessin and carried out between 1997 and 2000. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of this kind of intervention and illustrates how it enabled the urbanization of a zone that in the past had always been menaced by natural dangers caused by the Cassarate river.
