The economic development of forest enterprises in the canton of Glarus can be illustrated using more or less complete accounts, which go back for more than 10 years and clearly demonstrate the need for subsidies. Losses, of wood production and protective function, (300–400 Swiss francs per ha,without subsidies) remained unchanged following the damage caused by hurricane Vivian in 1992, albeit with diminishing yield and lower subsidies. This means that, since 1996,owners have carried considerable losses themselves. The concentration process towards large-scale forest enterprises has begun and financial problems could force communities to accelerate this process. The main goal is to maintain the protective function of the forest and boost the regional forest economy if wood, as a product, is not to be relegated to the background.
