During the melting period of the winter 1998/99, which was rich in snow, large parts of northern Switzerland were covered with two heavy and long-lasting rainfall events resulting in large inundation damage and dangerous flood situations. Although the considered area is rather limited, the extensive hydrologic data set from two small prealpine testcatchments with different basin characteristics offered an excellent opportunity to provide a detailed analysis of the flow processes in May 1999.
