The unique Salix arboretum Oberli in Wattwil (Canton of St. Gallen,Switzerland) is described and the research activities associated with this collection are listed. The collection comprises 72 species and 33 hybrids from Europe, North America and Asia. Main emphasis is on species which are indigenous in the Alps. The status of the collection within Europe is discussed.
