Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an engineerin g field in which flow fields and fields of related scalar variables, such as tempera ture and chemical species concentrations, are calculated in great detail for the domain of interest. The flow field calculations are performed by solving discretized f orms of the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy, and other r elevant variables. The final results are detailed maps of the flow field showing fluid v elocities, temperatures and species concentrations throughout the system. These results can be used to gain a better understanding of the system of interest. CFD resul ts can illustrate how a piece of equipment operates, how to troubleshoot problems, h ow to optimize performance, and how to design new equipment.
