When I first read about the call for submissions, particularly the one under the heading “Why the Middle Ages?” I thought I knew for sure what was the true source of my love for this period; it was a remedy for homesickness. To read and to write about certain aspects of medieval, particularly urban, history was the mental bridge that linked me with my northern German home regardless of where I lived.
