Dr. Charles Auguste Gauthier was born in Quebec on March 15, 1901. His father, a doctor, practiced Otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology. He studied classics at the séminaire de Québec and medicine at Laval. He received his medical degree in 1926. From 1926 to 1932, he specialized in neuropsychiatry in Montreal and then in New York. In 1944, he moved to the Mayo Clinic, and in 1949 in Paris.
