The Experiment of Producing Brass Plate in Compliance to Company Standards Self reliance of the national defense and security for the main equipments of weapon system are absolutely necessary in anticipating the case of embargo during the state of emergency. It includes the domestic products of ammunition plate material, which is used for the small caliber ammunition 5,56 mm, especially the Pindad's code MU5-TJ type as the most used ammunition in TNI (Indonesian armed forces), along with the SS1 assault rifle. The experiment was conducted on ammunition brass strip for 5.56 mm calibre following the company standard requirements which refer to NATO Standard SS109. The raw materials consisted of Super copper rod, Zinc Ingot SHG, Nickel Screen, Phosporus copper, and Aluminium plate. The casting weight without Al is 89 kg (4 slabs), and the casting + Al is 160 kg (7 slabs). The test result of characterization of brass plate (Cu-Zn 70-30) – The chemical composition of Slab : the chemical content of Cu remained in the range of Company's standard, and also the substances of Pb, Fe, Ni, P, Sb, and Sn are below of the maximum level of the company standard. The other experiments which have been done included roll test, metallography (micro-structure) observation of brass plate, hardness testing of brass strip, and annealing testing of brass plate. All of the tests have fullfilled the company standard requirements which refer to NATO Standard SS109. The production cost of brass plate per kg equals Rp 55,838.000/160 kg or Rp 348,987.5, and the production cost of brass strip per strip is Rp 55,838.000 / 11 strip or Rp 5,076,181.8, which was below imported product price, since it did not include the cost of transportation and insurance from abroad.
