Sağlık Çalışanlarına Yönelik Şiddet: Bir Kamu Hastanesi Örneği

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the rates of verbal, physical and sexual violence, sources of violence, effects of violence, methods of coping with the violence of physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel in a public hospital. Study Design: The sample of this descriptive study was composed of 347 health workers, 104 physicians, 93 nurses and 150 other hospital personnel working in a public hospital operating in Ankara between 1 November and 31 December 2017. A questionnaire form was applied to assess the violence experienced by the participants. Results: It was found that 96.2% of physicians were exposed to verbal violence, 9.6% physical violence and 16.3% sexual violence; 95,7% of nurses were exposed to verbal violence, 16.1% physical violence and 26,8% sexual violence; while other hospital staff 80.7% of them were exposed to verbal violence, 4.7% physical violence and 10% sexual violence. It has been determined that physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel generally prefer not to do anything to cope with violence. Physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel were found to be the most violent group towards nurses. It was determined that the patients gave the most verbal violence to physicians and the physicians had the most sexual violence against nurses. Conclusion: It was determined that verbal, physical and sexual violence rates for physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel were high, and nurses were the most risky group among occupational groups, especially for verbal and sexual violence exposure. Physicians were found to be the source of violence after patients and their relatives. It may be proposed that public, nongovernmental organizations and the media act together to increase legal measures against the violence that health workers are exposed.
