The decrease in consumption of traditional diets and the increase in consumption of high-calorie processed foods coincide with the prevalence of obesity. The aim of the present article was to examine the social, sensory and somatic advantages of home meals and their relationship with body weight. Related scientific literature was sought out in five databases, out of 169 located studies, 14 met the inclusion criteria for a narrative review. The results show that home meals would be eating episodes that include typical preparations accepted culturally by families and that conform to the characteristics of a nutritionally adequate diet. Regular consumption of home meals could contribute to reduce the prevalence of obesity.
