Objective: this paper focuses on the care study of sons and daughters during childhood and adolescence when a father and/or a mother emigrate.Methodology: sons and daughters, female caregivers and male caregivers of 49 families living in six municipalities of the coffee growing region were interviewed. Results: the analysis accounts for the convergence of support grounded in parental network and the social practice of solidarity and family reciprocity among co-resident and non-co-resident relatives. These are based on gender-differentiated features and the reestablishment of sons and daughters dependent on new places and life circumstances. Conclusions: results show the trajectory of care supported on the patriarchal mandate, the need of economical resources, the feminization of care, the role of the co-presence and stability of relationship building “as if”, and the participation of men pressed by the circumstances and mediated or summoned by women. Finally, it is shown how to “give” makes the difference between the process of taking care and the lack of care.
