The goal is to provide a better understanding of how religious systems emerge and evolve in relation to the respective cultural systems to which they belong. This article outlines an analysis of religious behaviour as a system, in order to demonstrate that its structure and function respond to changing historical circumstances, resulting in a succession of historical paradigms. At the same time, both the formation and the transformation of religion is found to be mediated by specific mechanisms of the human mind, the same in all the great traditions. The case of early Christianity is considered. Finally, the question arises concerning the necessary adaptation of religion in a world marked by modernity, globalization and secularism.
