Traditionally, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia has been associated with patients with marked immunodeficiency, especially due to HIV infection. However, in the face of certain clinical conditions such as cancer, lymphoproliferative syndromes, transplants (especially solid organs), autoimmune diseases, and the use of immunosuppressive medications for the management of these conditions, Pneumocystis jirovecii infections are increasingly common despite prophylaxis, which is not completely carried out in all patients; this increases the morbidity and mortality in vulnerable populations. Moreover, coinfections in immunosuppressed patients are a common situation that worsensthe prognosis.
