Objective: to estimate the consumption and self-medication of psychotropic drugs in the city of Bogota and to characterize the consumer population . A psychotropic drug is any substance that is used in: the diagnosis, treatment, mitigation, modification or prevention of a disease, an abnormal physical or mental state or their symptoms in humans. Materials and methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study  realized in the city of Bogota, D.C (Colombia), through a survey applied to the study participants . Results: this study showed that 26% of the participants reported consuming or having consumed psychotropic drugs and the majority reported their consumption for sleep-related disorders followed by anxiety and depression;There was an association between the age groups and the consumption of psychotropic drugs (Chi2 = 14.3955 p = 0.0061). The participants did not report self-medication . Conclusions: the consumption of psychotropic drugs has been increasing due to the increase of diseases of the mental sphere, as well as those related to sleep disorders.
