The purpose of this article was to verify the effectiveness of the Brazilian law (and its alterations) to combat drunken driving was effective to inhibiting the driving of motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol in the Federal District (DF) in the cut between 2008 and 2018. Traffic violence is one of the major concerns of modern society. Every year, in Brazil alone, almost 47,000 lives are interrupted, and more than 400 people are left with some sequelae due to vehicular accidents. In this context, drunken driving is one of the main causes of accidents. Attentive to this, society has called for modernizing and promoting greater rigor in legislation. The methodology was based on the documentary collection and data analysis regarding drunk driving between the years 2008 and 2018, within the Federal District, provided by the Federal District Transit Department - DETRAN/DF. The results indicated that there was a significant increase in the number of inebriations due to drunken driving leading to the realization that the mere imposition of stricter laws is not enough to change drivers' behavior. It was found that the number of people killed in the DF roads decreased, but it was not possible to establish a relationship with the implementation of the Brazilian Law to combat drunken driving. Finally, it is concluded that it is necessary to search for alternatives capable of impacting the drivers' habits by providing prudent drivers and aware of their role in the search for safer traffic.
