The article discusses research results that analyze the reasons why 39 students chose to attend a degree in Mathematics at UNEMAT/ Caceres, Mato Grosso State. To this end, the qualitative research method was adopted, based on excerpts from written narratives. The data were organized into categories: a) Desire to be a teacher and; b) The course that has been left to me. From the propositions presented and the dialogue with the authors that gave us theoretical support, we concluded that most students did not opt for the teaching profession but were there for the desire or need of having a Higher Education degree.
