In the socioeconomic field, for example, there are large-scale, representative sample surveys (e.g., General Household Survey), current and historical population censuses, international comparative datasets, longitudinal surveys, economic time series, and data about markets, companies, and commerce. In the UK a centrally funded system of national data services for higher education provides for the dissemination of much of this research data, which is free at the point-of-use and accessible over the Internet (via JANET, the UK academic network).
