A local area network offers a social science microcomputer user many nice advantages but it can also create a host of problems for the individuals in charge of network administration. As social science microcomputer use continues to increase, local area networks will offer social scientists welcome communication, file storage and peripheral equipment sharing capabilities. For the network administrators problems arise in: initial funding for the additional equipment needed, the definiiion of which network to install, the added security problems in running a network, additional responsibilities for storage backup, the establishmeni of access policies, the day-to-day maintenance of the network and its software, and providing the additional help needed by the users of the system so that they can take advantage of the new network Numb^of PCson Multlus^ PC Systems (thousands)
