O objetivo desse trabalho foi analisar o crescimento e a produtividade das culturas do milho e do feijao-caupi em resposta a disponibilidade hidrica nos sistemas de plantio exclusivo e consorciado no Semiarido brasileiro. As culturas foram dispostas em tres configuracoes quanto aos sistemas de cultivo: plantio consorciado de milho e feijao-caupi, plantio exclusivo de feijao-caupi, e plantio exclusivo de milho. Aos 40 dias apos a semeadura, com o inicio do pendoamento do milho e da fase de floracao do feijao-caupi, as tres configuracoes foram submetidas a cinco diferentes lâminas de irrigacao com base na evapotranspiracao de referencia (ETo). Ao longo dos ciclos foram obtidas a fitomassa seca total da parte aerea e o indice de area foliar, os quais foram usados no calculo de indices morfofisiologicos e os componentes de producao. Observou-se que o feijao-caupi no sistema exclusivo promoveu reducao do crescimento e da produtividade com lâminas de agua acima de 100%.ETo. Para a cultura do milho, em ambos os sistemas de plantio, e o feijao-caupi consorciado, os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a lâmina de 125%.ETo. A diminuicao da disponibilidade de agua e o sistema consorciado resultaram reducao do crescimento e dos componentes de producao de ambas as culturas quando comparados ao sistema de plantio exclusivo. A B S T R A C T The aim of this study was to analyze the growth and yield of corn and cowpea in response to water availability in unique planting and intercropping systems in the Brazilian semiarid. The cultures were placed in three configurations as the cropping systems: intercropped maize and cowpea, unique planting cowpea, and unique planting corn. At 40 days after sowing, with the beginning of tasseling and flowering stage of cowpea, three configurations were subjected to five different irrigation levels based on reference evapotranspiration (ETo). Throughout the cycles of total dry mass of shoots and leaf area index, which were used in the calculation of Morphophysiological indices and yield components were obtained. It was observed that cowpea in exclusive system promoted reduction and productivity growth at water depths greater than 100 %. ETo. For corn in both tillage systems, intercropping and cowpea, the best results were obtained with blade of 125 %. ETo. Decreased water availability and intercropping system resulted in reduced growth and yield components of both cultures when compared to the unique planting system.
