This article examines the challenges faced by the teachers from Piauí in the beginning of the 21 st century. These challenges are the result of theoretical, political and cultural issues accumulated since the second half of the 20 th century, summarized in the change process required by society, such as the constant improvement of knowledge and pedagogical practices. The article, of qualitative nature, is grounded on a theoretical framework that contributed to motivate the discussion. Initially, the paper outlines the first steps of Brazilian education and how it evolved generating enormous changes to teachers’ training that rebounded in society.
