This hybrid study that integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches, aimed at proposing a rating scale to the EPPLE (Exam of Proficiency for Foreign Language Teachers) written test. This study analyzed the grammatical accuracy of 18 candidate written production that participated in the EPPLE-written test. These candidates were randomly chosen from the EPPLE data and they were majoring in Letters course from different Universities in Brazil located in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Distrito Federal states. The exams were taken between 2011 and 2013 and they were delivered by computer. Four judges/raters, familiarized with EPPLE, evaluated the EPPLE-written test preliminarily using a holistic scale that was designed by this researcher to classify the candidates in different scoring rubrics. This preliminary holistic scale contains criteria to classify each candidate in five proficiency levels. The grammatical accuracy in the written productions was analyzed and linguistic deviations (errors) were categorized. After the categorization, the data were segmented in T-units and analyzed by quantitative indexes. The results showed quantitative and qualitative differences in deviation occurrences in each proficiency band. With these results we described the grammatical aspects for each proficiency band in a grammatical accuracy scale to EPPLEwritten test. This purpose intends to contribute with the EPPLE project and with future research investigating the candidates’ written production features in proficiency assessment in Brazil. Key-words: Grammatical Accuracy. Proficiency Assessment. Rating Scale. EPPLE. Assessment for Language Teachers.
