This study analyzes the strategies that family farmers from the Rio Paraíso settlement have used to access the markets, the arrangements and the marketing channels. The research used as a theoretical framework the New Institutional Economics (NIE), focused on the influence of institutional actors in social and economic relations established between the collective action groups. A questionnaire was applied to a sample of family farmers from the settlement. And were interviewed leaders of social organizations and government officers. The main results of the work indicate that the farmer’s production are defined and influenced by tradition and knowledge in the activity, the economic results, the market access facility and family conditions concerning the availability of people to work. Farmers recognize the role of trade unions, associations and cooperatives, by them direct or indirect performance. Most families understand the cooperative as the preferred channel to access the market. The importance of public policies to stimulate the commercialization was observed in the research, also the dependence on public policies by the cooperative, to achieve good results for family farmers.
