Objective: To describe the epidemiological and geographic distribution of deaths due to stroke in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Methodology: This is a descriptive epidemiological study using secondary data from the Mortality Information System, available in the Datasus database. Results: Between 1996 and 2015 there were 227,167 deaths, with 10,405 (4.58%) deaths due to stroke. From this total, the female sex [OR= 1.49(IC95% 1.42-1.56) p=<0,001], the breed/yellow color [OR= 1.91(IC95% 1.41-2.58) p=<0,001], those aged ≥60 years [OR 2.16(IC95% 2.05-2.27); p<0,001], no schooling [OR= 1.13(IC95% 1.06-1.26) p=0,026] and widowers [OR= 2.32(IC95% 2.17-2.47) p=<0,001] were co-signed with the highest odds. Of the total AVE, 7.466 (71.75%) occurred in the metropolitan region of Manaus, while 2,939 (28.25%) were in the State's countryside, with greater chance the residents of the South Amazonian Meso-region [OR= 1.39(IC95% 1.19-1.40) p=0,001]. Conclusion: Death rates due to stroke have shown a marked increase, with a higher prevalence in social groups aged over 60 years and residing in the Southern Meso-region of Amazonia.
