Objective: To show the experiences of undergraduates from different health areas in relation to the non-compulsory extracurricular internship in the Nucleus of Hospital Epidemiological Surveillance (NVEH). Methods: This is a qualitative and descriptive research, carried out at the NVEH, located in the Health Sciences Center, belonging to the State University of Londrina, Londrina, PR. Data analysis was based on the principles proposed by Bardin. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee Involving Human Beings of the State University of Londrina, with CAAE no 38642514.3.0000.5231. Results: 18 graduates were interviewed, most of them male (83%), trainees (72%) and monitor (28%). The undergraduate courses involved were medicine, nursing and pharmacy. The interviewees pointed out the positive and negative points and suggested strategies to improve the work process that involves the various activities of the internship, among which are the notifications of diseases and injuries. The importance of the trainees in the NVEH is appreciated, both for the aid that their practice provides to the nucleus and for the opportunity of theoretical learning subsidized by the practice, as well as the integration between the undergraduate and the hospital staff. The participants presented negative and positive points, and the need for improvements in the stage. Conclusion: it is noted that the notification of diseases and injuries has made it possible to raise the awareness of monitors and trainees of the evolution in the area of public health in recent years, as well as the need for changes in the area and increases in current health policies.
