Sumber daya alam nirhayati, hayati, dan sumber air pada kawasan karst merupakan daya tarik yang mendorong manusia untuk memanfaatkan gua-gua (cave) dan ceruk-ceruk alam (rock shelter) seperti yang terdapat di Nagari Situmbuk. Keberadaan sebagian gua dan ceruk menyimpan jejak budaya manusia ketika memanfaatkannya. Sisa-sisa budaya itulah yang menjadi penanda kehidupan manusia dalam memanfaatkan lingkungan alamnya di masa lalu hingga kini. Tujuan penelitian di Ngalau Tompok Syohiah I adalah untuk menggambarkan pemanfaatan ruang gua dan kronologinya, dan mengetahui faktor-faktor lingkungan sebagai pendukung keberadaan situs tersebut. Metode penelitian bersifat eksploratif – deskriptif menggunakan alur penalaran induktif (khusus ke umum) dengan melakukan survei dan ekskavasi. Hasil penelitian arkeologi dan geologi di Ngalau Tompok Syohiah I menjelaskan pemanfaatan ruang gua oleh manusia yang menghuni sementara di gua itu pada sekitar abad ke-16 hingga abad ke-20 M. Perlakuan meratakan bagian permukaan tanah di dalam ruangan ditunjukkan oleh stratigrafi pada kotak-kotak ekskavasi yang menggambarkan bahwa kondisi awalnya miring ke arah utara. Perlakuan istimewa pada stalagmit, hingga membuat makam semu, serta simbol-simbol yang digambarkan pada dinding gua dikaitkan dengan religi lama yang berlatar belakang pada kegiatan pertanian, hingga kegiatan lainnya. Aktivitas tersebut sangat didukung oleh kondisi lingkungan yang dekat dengan sumber air, dan lahan yang subur. Natural resources, including water sources in the karst area attract and encourage human to take advantages of caves and rock shelters such as those found in Nagari Situmbuk. Some caves and niches have kept the traces of human culture during their inhabitation. Those cultural remnants are the mark of human life in utilizing their natural environment from the past to the present. The purpose research at Ngalau Tompok Syohiah I is to describe the cave space used and its chronology, and to determine the environmental factors that support the site's existence. The research method is exploratory-descriptive using inductive reasoning lines (specific to the general) by conducting surveys and excavations. The results of archaeological and geological research in Ngalau Tompok Syohiah I explained the use of cave space by humans who had temporarily inhabited around the 16th to the 20th centuries. The treatment of flattening the soil surface in the room showed by the stratigraphy of the excavation boxes depicts the initial condition was tilted to the north. The special treatment of stalagmites, the creation of fake tombs, and the symbols depicted on the cave walls are associated with old religions with a background of agricultural activities and other activities. These activities were strongly supported by environmental conditions that are close to water sources and fertile land.
