The present day techniques and machinery used in automobile industry to assess the useful lifespan of an object are high end, heavy and expertise oriented. Away from these conventional and not so user friendly approaches an illustrative attempt has been made in this paper wherein a low-cost machine vision system with image processing is designed for surface deformation inspections and thereby to assess the lifespan of the objects. Machine vision systems provide quality control and real-time feedback for industrial processes, overcoming physical limitations and subjective judgment of humans. The work is based on the concept of pattern recognition since these patterns can be intelligently used and algorithmically designed to address many issues. The present day techniques such as light interferometer, shearography, holography etc. requires excellent expertise whereas the presented work requires just the basics and the proposed method can be seen as a combination of all advanced systems involving optical and image capturing principles.
