The objectives of this research are to reveal the k inds of symbolic violence portrayed in Lois Lowry’s , The Giver; to identify how that symbolic violence is re presented, and show the effects of symbolic violenc e are represented in the story. To reveal the kinds of symbolic violence and the effects portrayed in the story, the resear cher employs the Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence. Mean while, in analyzing the ways the symbolic violence is represented, the researcher uses Rebecca J. Lukens’ theory of ch ildren’s literature.
