This article resumes moments of the path of construction of third-level courses in computer science in Brazil and abroad. The aim is to understand the characterization of undergraduate courses in Information Systems as courses that have “computation as a means”  in contrast to other that are classified as courses that have “computation as an end”. In the analysis of this division we address the following two tensions:  the option for a Brazilian path in opposition to a foreign model and the option for an interdisciplinary course in opposition to a course centered in the exact sciences
