This project was carried out at the Centro Internacional de Producción Limpia Lope of Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje SENA, Regional Nariño, to evaluate two types of substrates as alternatives that improve the quality of the strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch) variety Albión under an open hydroponic system. Coconut fiber and rice husk substrates were used, alone and in a mixture (70 % 30 %, 50 % -50 %, 30 % 70 %), compared with a control in soil with plastic cover. The physical and chemical variables of the fruit such as weight, diameter, length, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, and firmness were evaluated. A Random Complete Blocks design with 6 treatments and 4 repetitions was used. The mixtures of the substrates obtained a better response for the firmness variable than the soil treatment, also, the 100 % rice husk treatment obtained a superior response in the variables of Brix degrees and titratable acidity, allowing the generation of an innovative and competitive proposal for strawberry production in reduced areas in Nariño.
