IN BRIEF Basal insulin therapy is an integral part of intensive management of type 1 diabetes and is often used in conjunction with oral agent therapy for type 2 diabetes. Currently available insulins do not always provide adequate background coverage. Insulin glargine, a new product that will soon be available for commercial use, addresses this need by providing 24-h coverage without peaks or valleys.
