Diabetes mellitus is a disease that requires frequent medical attention. The hospitalization of a person with diabetes for an incurrent illness mandates ongoing medical evaluation and treatment of the diabetic state. Such close attention is best performed by a physician with special interest and expertise in diabetes. Thus, quality care for the hospitalized patient with diabetes usually requires concurrent care by a physician expert in diabetes and by a physician responsible for the patient's intercurrent illness.
